POP

Photo On Profile, Point Of Purchase/Presence, Post Office Protocol

(pronounced: pop - it is an acronym with three different meanings)

POP (Photo -or- Picture On Profile)
Used in chat rooms and on social networking sites, it refers to the fact that you've posted images of yourself on your profile or mini-homepage.

POP (Point Of Purchase, also known as Point Of Sale)

Quite simply it is the place where a sale is made. On a macro-level, a point of purchase may be a mall, market or city. On a micro-level, retailers consider a point of purchase to be the area surrounding the cash register or the counter where customers pay.

POP (Point Of Presence)
POP as a Point Of Presence is a telephone number that gives users dial-up access to the Internet. This term is also used to describe an actual connection point on the Internet's backbone. see also: gigaPOP, ISP

POP (Post Office Protocol)
POP as a Post Office Protocol is a protocol used by mail clients to retrieve messages from a mail server. It comes in two flavors: POP2, which requires SMTP to send messages, and POP3, which can be used with or without SMTP. You need to know this because an e-mail account is often referred to as your "POP account."
