GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

GEO is the AI version of SEO. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refers to structuring digital content so that artificial intelligence search and answer engines (like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude) can read and summarize the content in their results.

Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) focuses on pushing a website to the top of a list of hyperlinks by targeting  keyword rankings, backlinks, and click-through rates with the goal of getting users to click a link and visit your website. GEO focuses on making your content part of the AI-generated response by targeting natural language processing, context relevance, and clarity with the goal of getting your content cited or recommended within an AI answer even if the user doesn't click your link.

Tips include using conversational language, like questions and answers in an FAQ or guide; using actual facts, such as statistics or quotes, that LLMs can use; and building an online presence outside of your website, like on forums or review sites.
