cognitive stunting

a.k.a. cognitive burnout
If one introduces artificial intelligence too early to young children, there is a risk of impairing or limiting their mental growth, known as "cognitive stunting".

Studies show it disrupts the maturation of nerve cells and brain structure, and that stunted children often face delayed development in language, executive function, and intelligence, resulting in lower average IQ scores.

Historical perspective: Coined by Dr. Rebecca Winthrop at the Brookings Institution, cognitive stunting describes how children use AI chatbots and digital shortcuts instead of engaging in effortful thinking. Instead of offloading skills they already know, children bypass the struggle, mistakes, and practice required to build reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving abilities in the first place.
