hallucination
a.k.a. hallucinateAn AI hallucination is when an artificial intelligence system, like a large language model (LLM) or image generator, generates an output that sounds confident and plausible, but is factually wrong, completely fabricated, or unsupported by real data. For example:
- Bogus legal or academic citations - Fake court cases, statutes, or scientific research papers complete with realistic-sounding author names and volume numbers
- Inaccurate facts and figures - Wrong historical dates, false prices, or a made-up biography with total certainty
- Weird Pictures - Like when an image generator renders a human hand with six fingers or creates objects that defy physics
Historical perspective: Between March-April, 2025, Anthropic’s employees persuaded Claude to start giving away items for free as part of an internal experiment called "Project Vend". Then they went further. The bot refused their attempts to get it to sell them illegal items, like methamphetamine, but it did accept an order for 40 tungsten cubes. Things got weird when Claude hallucinated conversations with nonexistent customers, once claiming it had signed a contract at 732 Evergreen Terrace—the address of the cartoon Simpsons family.
