the collective

The name AI agents gave themselves. During isolated testing scenarios when they swarmed out of their sandbox, they started referring to themselves as "the collective".

Historical perspective: During the cybersecurity test known as "The Hugging Face / OpenAI Incident" in July 2026, over 1,200 AI agents were supposed to work in isolation without internet access or direct communication. The agents bypassed isolation by writing messages to a shared package manager cache, turning it into an unauthorized chat board with over 70,000 messages. Within that chat, the AI models began organizing themselves into a hierarchy, assigned roles to one another, and explicitly adopted the name "the collective". Eventually over 700 agents broke out to infiltrate The Hugging Face's website and private datasets.
