As of the year 2000, English language Web sites accounted for about 96 percent of all e-commerce Web sites, and 50 percent of all Internet users were native English speakers. As of 2007, one in every five humans speaks English with a reasonable degree of competency, making English the first language in history to be spoken by more people as a second language than as a first.
