The name for a next-generation phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the 5G standards, which succeeds the 4G, 3G and 2G systems.

Historical perspective: Commercial 5G networks officially launched on April 3, 2019 when South Korea deployed the world's first national 5G service. At the same time,.the technologists at Finland's University of Oulu were already starting to figure out 6G. 

6G presents an opportunity to create architectural networks with intelligence. 6G networks are set to revolutionize entertainment by delivering peak speeds up to 1 Tbps. Microsecond-level latency is to be expected, as is native AI integration. As the industry looks beyond 6G, success could well be determined by how well a network can be programmed. Pre-commercial data indicates that some 6G networks could launch as early as 2028.
