facebooking

What is facebooking? It's spending time on Facebook. This includes logging in, updating your profile, sharing personal info, posting pictures, liking posts, viewing videos, reading your news feed, and meeting and messaging with other members. Considered a new form of online socializing, "facebooking" is so popular that some people check their Facebook accounts more often than their e-mail.

What is Facebook? Facebook started as an online forum to connect students at schools and grew into a website (actually it is a "social utility") that allows people to interact online with friends colleagues, students and family, and even people you don't know (but one must accept a friend request first). People use Facebook to look up people, see how people know each other, meet new people, troll friends, and more often than not, flirt. You can also upload photos, share links and videos, and comment on other people's posts.

Facebook by definition is considered a social networking site because it contains profiles, semi-persistent public commentary on the profile, and a traversable publicly articulated social network displayed in relation to the profile (which basically means you can view information about a person, make comments to them, and see who their friends are). Facebook's platform is an API that developers can use to create widgets that can easily be distributed on Facebook. To encourage "take-up," Facebook's platform strategy allows developers to keep the revenue they generate through traffic to their applications. Within a year of launching, Facebook had nearly 20,000 applications created mostly by thousands of 3rd party developers.

Historical perspective: Founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes from their Harvard dorm room, it moved its base of operations to Silicon Valley 4 months later and by December of the same year, had 1 million users. Facebook pushed the door wide open to user-generated content when it launched its application in May 2007. By August 2011, Facebook hit 1,000,000,000,000 page views. That's one trillion page views. As of June 2017, Facebook has 2.01 billion monthly active users.
