unalive

The term "unalive" is online jargon that refers to death or suicide.

It is a substitution for certain words or concepts which tend to be moderated or even censored by moderation algorithms on certain platforms.

Similar examples are the words seggs and corn which are used instead of sex and pornography, respectively, and are used even when talking about things from a clinical or educational perspective. Instead of writing out "sexual assault", users can use the acronym SA, thus being able to talk about their experience without triggering the automatic blocking algorithm.

In fact, the invention of new words instead of substitution of letters in already existing ones proves to work better, as it is the first thing moderators notice. None of this was organized by a single entity. It developed as slang does: through repetition and imitation, but in this case the slang developed out of necessity due to the algorithm, also known as "algospeak".
