platform

The type of operating system on which a computer or software application runs. For example, some common platforms are Windows NT, Windows 2000, Macintosh, Unix, and Linux, to name a few.

When a program can run on more than one platform, it is known as cross-platform. When a program can run on any platform, it is known as platform agnostic.
