effective altruism

a.k.a. Effective Altruism, effective altruist, EA
A 21st-century social movement that uses evidence, science, and careful reasoning to figure out how to do the most good possible with one's own time, money, and resources

Historical perspective: When it started in the late 2000s, it was more about malaria nets in the south and global pandemic prevention. People were doing research to figure out which charity was doing the most benefit. The exact phrase "effective altruism" was officially coined in 2011 by founders associated with the Centre for Effective Altruism.

People who identified as effective altruists got into AI very early on, and influenced early AI workers. In fact, if you went into an AI company in 2026, some percentage of workers identified as an EA. People on the right side of politics tend to think it is some kind of grand conspiracy or cult or religion, and while there are some odd things about it (like they're very concerned about shrimp welfare), they've been correct about AI for a long time in the sense that it would improve (see RSI) and therefore become more dangerous.
