ASMR

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response

Also known as a braingasm or brain orgasm, ASMR is experiencing a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, in response to a specific gentle stimulus, usually a particular sound, whispering voices, paper tearing, or scalp massage.

It’s an online abbreviation used in texting, instant messaging, email, blogs, newsgroups and social media postings.

Historical perspective: The term ASMR was coined in 2010, but the audio and visual-induced sensation has always existed. If you've ever experienced that cringe-worthy feeling you get when you hear nails on a chalkboard, ASMR is the opposite. It's the chills you get when you hear a beautiful voice singing or the prickly sensation when you hear or see something soothing, without having to physically touch it.
