Talk. It’s what we do all day. We talk to ourselves; we talk to people at work or school; we talk on the phone; we email; we text; we head into group chats; we talk on our social media accounts; we obviously talk a lot to others if we are users of online dating apps.
And lots of times, our minds want to talk to us when we are trying to sleep. We re-live the most embarrassing times of our personal history; we are presented with the cringe-worthy goofs we made that day; or we ask ourselves questions like do penguins have knees or what we would like to come back as if reincarnation is real.

There are plenty, like the following:

● The app offers safety and security, especially in this kinda cringy political climate
● The app is a space for bi’s to support each other
● The app gives bi’s the chance for real talk about their lives, struggles, goals, and more
● The app offers a social outlet for bi’s who can share both digital and IRL spaces for fun and entertainment
And like people of all demographics, bi’s often have their own slang terms in their talk, within their own cultural context. How many of us adults, for example, can say that we understand the current slang of teenagers?
Let’s have a look at some of the most common bi slang terms, their meanings, and how they came to be.
Glossary of Bi Slang
This glossary is not huge, but it’s worth noting. Obviously, as with all demographic slang, it will continue to expand. Here goes.
Dual Flavored
This is common in everyday language among bi’s and those who refer to them. It obviously refers to the bi population in general and the fact that they are attracted to both genders.
Dual Engineered
The concept here is that no one wakes up one day and decides to be bi. It’s built within them and a part of who they are.
Flip and Flipper
The verb and the noun. This is a more playful way to describe themselves when they talk with each other or for them to describe themselves to other supportive souls. Some of its origin might come from the way dolphins flip when they jump out of the water - like “coming out” maybe.
AC/DC
Not to be confused with the band of the same name. It literally refers to two types of electrical current, alternating and direct and is used in casual conversation to describe oneself or someone who is bi.
Ambisextrous; Ambisexual
A play on the term ambidextrous which refers to someone who can use both hands with equal dexterity. So being bi means attraction to both sexes rather equally.
Switch-hitter
A term “stolen” from baseball that refers to a hitter who can bat left- or right-handed. So bi’s can be equally attracted to both sexes.
Bicurious George
This is a “take” on the children’s book, Curious George and refers to someone who is bi-curious and wants to explore the world of bisexuality.
Bi the Way
A play on words and a casual and lighthearted way for a bi to mention their sexuality in writing.
Bi-Cycle
Another play on words used in written conversation. It refers to those bi’s whose attractions may be to one gender for a time and then shift over to the other.
Reigning Cats and Dogs
A very new term not in common use yet. It seems to mean that in the world of being bi, giving power to those who have attraction to both sexes is a common goal - freedom of expression and equality.
So, where do bi’s most commonly use this slang? One major space is online dating. And there are plenty of sites and apps from which to choose. Let’s unpack some of them.
Taimi
As an all-inclusive LGBTQ+ dating and social platform, Taimi is known as a premier bi dating app. The app has social groups based on common identities and sexualities for its members to join, make connections with like-mindeds, and freely and openly talk. It’s a great space for bi’s to share their life experiences, relationship goals and challenges as well as start a group of their own.
BiCupid
Founded in 2003, BiCupid focuses on bi and bi-curious singles and couples who are seeking all sorts of relationships. While its membership is smaller than many other online dating sites and apps for bi’s, it has lots of great features. One of these is “Moments,” which is a social feed for all members who want to talk and share their lives via posts and have convos in a much more relaxed way.
Surge
This app has been around since 2013 and currently has about 3.5 million users. Its focus is on guys whose current bi-cycle is male. Users are really active, sending and receiving about 10 million chats a month. That’s a lot of talk. Surge also has a community group chat feature that lets everyone talk in a more relaxed way.
HER
Just like Surge, HER is an app that focuses on gals whose current bi-cycle is female. Users can seek any type of sapphic connection and start talking with mutuals when both swipe right. But even better is HER’s community groups, including one specifically for bi gals who want to chat with others in an open and free climate.
Bi-the-Way
Here’s the new kid on the block, only in operation since February 2025 with about 9K members so far. It’s a dating app with the normal swiping and matching, but the bi founders are dead set on a community climate. There are already a bunch of forums for bi’s to connect, develop friendships, have fun, and just be who they are (and maybe try out some of the newer bi slang terms).
