signal-to-noise ratio

A measure of the amount of useful information found in a given Usenet newsgroup. This phrase is often used derogatorily; for example, "The signal-to-noise ratio in this newsgroup is pretty low." It is also a measurement of the quality of a connection (for example, of a phone line or network cable), in terms of speed and reliability.
