screensaver

A program that activates itself when a computer has been inactive for a period of time. Screensavers were originally designed to prevent images from being burned into monochrome monitors. Even though modern monitors do not run this risk, screensavers are popular for their entertainment value. They often show moving images, floating text, or rotating photographs.
