A language-neutral platform for enterprise and Web development. The aim is to provide an abstract machine for professional developers, covering both traditional IT client/server and n-tier programs and Web-oriented applications.

Historical perspective: It was heralded as the most important development since the introduction of Windows in 1991 and described as a revolutionary multi-language framework, covering all aspects of application development and closely integrating the Web at every step.
