GSM

Global Standard for Mobile Communication

The dominant set of standards used in Europe and parts of Asia for wireless communications. The audio-encoding subset of the GSM standard is best known to computer users because its data compression and decompression techniques are also used for Web-phone communication and for encoding WAV and AIF files. GSM is based on TDMA and can carry eight simultaneous calls on the same frequency. It is a 2G technology used by AT&T Wireless, Cingular, and VoiceStream.
