virtual directory

A directory or folder on a server that is not in the actual server directory structure.

Alternatively, it is a software layer that delivers a single access point for identity management applications and service platforms.

Historical perspective: As of 2011, virtual directory servers most commonly used the LDAP protocol, but more sophisticated virtual directories also support SQL as well as DSML and SPML.
