spin-out

A corporate strategy to develop businesses based on emerging technologies that are not part of the company's core strategy or product offering, and then sell minority stakes to public investors. The difference between a spin-out and a spin-off is that the former has the potential to be some of the best technology developed whereas the latter is usually a component the company does not want.
