social platform

The name of the platform that runs social networking services. It is a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow independent Web developers to build applications that run on social networking sites, using the data stored by that network.

For example, Facebook uses a proprietary API (known as FBML) whereas Google's OpenSocial uses an open standard that can be adopted by anyone on the Web.
