The name of a virus distributed as an e-mail attachment. When opened, it disables numerous safeguards in Microsoft Word (a word processor) and causes Microsoft Outlook (an e-mail program) to send the virus to the first fifty people in each of the user's address books. Melissa wreaked havoc one day in March of 1999, when it forced Microsoft to shut down all of its incoming e-mail servers.
