Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

(pronouced: I-triple-E)

A membership organization of engineers, scientists, and students, it sets standards for computers and communications, such as LANs, Ethernets, FireWire, and networks in general. Created in 1963, the IEEE grew out of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers.
