hire number

The number of an employee, based on when that person was hired in relation to the rest of the company. In the early days, it was a popular thing to say you were the twelfth person, for example, to be hired at such-and-such firm, but low hire numbers (thirty or below) made people too egotistical. Now, most companies do not tell employees their hire number (especially if there are more than 100 people at the firm).
