driver

A computer program that interacts with a particular device or software. A driver is a file that contains the information a program needs to operate a peripheral (such as a scanner or mouse). An extremely handy use of the Internet is to download a driver directly from the manufacturer's Web site. In personal computing, a driver is often packaged as a dynamic link library (DLL) file.
