The act of checking one's e-mail even though you're certain you've received no important communication. In other words, it's when people compulsively and frequently check their e-mail even when they're not expecting an important message, and hence only end up deleting all of the spam. For example, "Could you hurry up so I can get online and check my e-mail?" "Who are you kidding, you just checked it an hour ago and all your friends are at practice." "Yeah, I know, I gotta check my spam."
