AOL Instant Messenger

A technology developed at America Online, it is an instant messaging service that allows you to chat online (IRT) with another user. It can be done either on your computer or via a wireless device, and there are no long-distance charges. It is considered an extremely "sticky" application; in fact, it's been measured that more than half of the time AOL users spend online is consumed by IM.
