vertical bar or pipe or prompt

In many programming languages, the pipe symbol is used as a mathematical operator. For example, it is pronounced "or" in the phrase "12 of one | a dozen of another." In MS-DOS and Unix, it is used to control the output of a command and is the prompt. Online, this symbol is often used to separate hyperlinks, and you will see it in ASCII art and smileys |-)
